Travelling in Peru? Don’t miss Huacachina, a tiny Peruvian village famous for its world-class sandboarding.
Built around a beautiful palm-fringed lagoon, and only 5km from Ica, it’s the perfect stop-off point for backpackers on their way to Lima or Arequipa.
How to get there
Buses from/to Lima (5 hours), Arequipa (12 hours) and Nazca (2 hours) all go through Ica. From here take a taxi to Huacachina for around 5 soles (£1)
Good bus companies are Cruz Del Sur and Soyuz. Check out the map below to see where Ica is.
Where to stay
Desert Nights is cheap and cheerful hostel with great views of the lagoon. The restaurant offers decent meals and delicious icecream milkshakes.

Casa de Arena (pictured above) is getting a makeover so it’s a little rough around the edges (think disused nightclubs, cold showers and no internet) but it does have a pool, nightly barbecues and friendly staff.<p>
Its sister hostel Casa de Arena II is just down the road and has a decent restaurant and bar for those looking for a more lively atmosphere.
