Need tips on creating a good journalism CV? We know how frustrating it can be trying to get that dream job, so we’ve put together a list of dos and don’ts.
1. Choose an effective layout
First impressions are vital! Editors must be able to scan read your CV or they’ll simply lose interest. Choose a layout that is creative but easy to read.
2. Write a short personal statement
Underneath your name write a couple of lines about yourself and what you’re looking for e.g: ‘An experienced blogger with an indepth knowledge of the travel industry and a keen interest in social media’.
3. List your key achievements
Rather than start with education/work experience, go straight in with your key achievements e.g: * Nominated for Best Blog 2011; * Highest grade at Sussex University (English/Media 2010). This will make a fabulous first impression and will keep the reader hooked!
3. Be proud of your work experience
Mention everything! This is your chance to shine and editors will be able to see what you’re capable of. Haven’t got work experience yet? Start blogging, create a Twitter account, send your CV into every magazine/website you can think of or put a shout-out on Facebook to see if any of your friends have contacts.
4. Don’t use clichés!
Clichés like ‘team player’, ‘passionate about fashion’ won’t get you noticed. You need to be honest, creative and even witty. If you can raise a smile from an editor then you might just stand a chance.
5. Include links to your published work
Prove you can write! This will set you apart from other applicants so include links or attach scans of articles or features you’ve written.
7. Don’t waste space
Use a small font and keep your CV to a maximum of 2 pages. Only mention things that are relevant to the job you’re applying for. Don’t include pages of previous employment unless it’s relevant. Do, however, show that you are capable of applying yourself and can hold down a job.
