The graveyard, which was built 1822, is the final resting place for many presitigious and powerful families – and it’s well worth a visit.

Among the beautiful marble facades and towering statues lies Eva Peron’s grave, the First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until her death in 1952.

History of the cemetery

Following the epidemic of yellow fever in the 1870s, many upper-class neighbourhoods fled San Telmo and moved to Recoleta.

Therefore it became a graveyard for the elite – and many famous personalities, military heroes and presidents were buried here.
