Siem Reap, the gateway to Angkor Wat, has become a major tourist destination, with visitors arriving by plane, bus, boat and tuk tuk.

It is approx 6.5 hours from Phnom Penn with bus tickets costing from $12 USD. Buses leave regularly throughout the morning and early afternoon.

We used the Mekong Express service which was clean, provided bottled water, a snack (a welcome surprise!) and much-needed air con.

Where to stay in Siem Reap

There are countless backpacker options but we stayed at Downtown Siem Reap hostel, which has a pool, lively bar and friendly bartender called Gus.

They use a tab system there which has its pros and cons. We were overcharged at the end of our stay and the staff at reception took so long sorting it out that we almost missed our bus!

But you can’t fault the accommodation and services. For other places to stay, check out Trip Advisor.
