Want to get the train from Hsipaw to Pyinoolwin and cross the Gokteik Viaduct? Get ready for a long journey!
Trains in Myanmar are notoriously slow and unreliable with some arriving 3 hours late, others not at all. But if you’re happy to wait around and keep your fingers crossed, you’ll most likely have a fantastic experience!
How long does the train take?
The train from Hsipaw to Pyinoolwin runs once a day (9.40am) and takes 6-7 hours, arriving around 4pm.
You can stay on until Mandalay (another 4 hours) but most travellers hop off here and get a share taxi which is a lot faster (1.5 hours).
Crossing the Gokteik Viaduct
It takes about 3.5 hours to reach the jaw-dropping Gokteik Viaduct, and about 25 minutes to cross. The train goes slowly so you can poke your head out of the window for that perfect Instagram shot!
TOP TIP: Remember to swivel your chair around (look for a lever under your seat) so you can face the window. And take lots of snacks. By all reports, this journey is a long one, so you’ll need to take supplies!
How to book train tickets
Just rock up to the train station 15 minutes before departure and book your seat on the day. If you want a little more comfort (and the swivelling chair) then book Upper Class (2,750 kyat). Ordinary class is 1,200 kyat.
Be warned, trains are often cancelled at the last minute so have back-up transport organised where possible!
