Kinabalu Mountain Lodge boasts some of the best views in Borneo.
On clear mornings you can see for miles and when the afternoon clouds roll in, you literally feel like you are sitting amongst them.
Located just 2km from Kinabalu Park, the lodge is a good choice for backpackers looking for budget to mid-range accommodation. Most choose to walk to the park but there is a taxi service available, albeit expensive.
The main reason to stay here is the balcony. You could easily while away many afternoons looking out onto the valley! The rest of the lodge is pretty dated. More ‘school camp’ than luxurious hotel-stay. But the price is fair.
Double rooms (88 ringgit) are cosy and clean and there’s a shared bathroom with hot showers (after 4.30pm). Dorms are available for 40 ringgit. Looking for something a bit special? Book the family rooms upstairs, each with their own private balcony (150 ringgit).
Because of its remote location, the staff offer a simple breakfast and dinner (13 ringgit per person) or you can make use of the kitchen facilities and cook your own meals.
The only downside of our stay was the lack of tourist information available. The staff knew little about Kinabalu National Park and its walking trails. And when we wanted to get information about buses to Kota Kinabatangan (so we could go on a river safari), we were given the wrong information and ended up waiting 3 hours for a bus!
So, while the view is to die for, you’ll need to do your own planning when it comes to climbing the mountain or visiting the park.
Also, there’s no wifi at Kinabalu Mountain Lodge, which makes it trickier to plan your next move! Be prepared and you’ll have a great time.
