Got a boyfriend who doesn’t want to travel? Worried you’ll split up if you leave?

This is a tricky one but you must trust your gut instinct. If you really want to travel (as you should!) then you have to make it happen. But that doesn’t necessarily mean splitting up with the love of your life.

There are a few things you can do before you make the big decision:

1. Ask him to join you

This might sound obvious, but have you actually sat down and had a serious conversation about your future together? Have you explained why you want to travel? And where you want to go? If not, then it’s time to lay your cards on the table.

When you do this, reiterate how much you’d like him to join you. Give him first refusal and say ‘I’d love you to come with me but if you can’t, I understand’.

2. Meet in the middle

If he can’t come with you, then suggest meeting in the middle every couple of months. I’ve met lots of girls travelling who are doing this. With WhatsApp, Viber and Skype there’s no reason why you can’t speak to him every day if you want to.

Perhaps lure him with to Thailand for a week’s holiday? Or ask him to join you in South Africa for a safari! It doesn’t have to be the end of your relationship if you meet in the middle.

3. Consider doing a three-month trial

Not sure you can handle long distance? At least give it a go! Agree to review the relationship after 3 months and if it’s not working for both of you, it’s time to discuss the alternatives.

4. Take take a break

Gulp. This is the difficult one. If he isn’t keen to join you and doesn’t want to do long-distance then it may be time to call it a day. Yes, it’s drastic. But what’s the alternative? Let all these wonderful experiences pass you by? Kiss goodbye to your dreams and settle down to a 9-5 job? Not likely.

Remember this: you are only young once. If you have the chance to travel, take it with both hands! This is YOUR life, not your boyfriend’s, not your friends’ and not your family’s. It’s time to do what makes you happy.

Go girl, you can do this!
