The first time I quit my job to go travelling was back in 2011. I set aside my fears –and creeping doubts that I’d never work again – and bought a one-way ticket to Mexico.
Family and friends worried it wasn’t safe for me to travel alone, and some thought I was crazy giving up a good job as a content editor for Time Inc UK. I shared the same concerns but there was something inside me that wasn’t content with my life in London. I needed to escape, experience something different. So, despite my fears – and everyone elses – I got on that plane.
Travelling alone gave me the confidence I’d lacked in London. I learned to surf in Nicaragua, hiked the Inca Trail in Peru, drank tequila in Mexico, and swam with pink dolphins in the Amazon. I even achieved my life-long dream: cage diving with great white sharks in South Africa.
My last stop was Australia and, after exploring the east coast, I found a job working for a publishing house in Melbourne and 4 years’ later became a permanent resident.
True to form, I soon got itchy feet. I left Australia in 2015 and zig-zagged across Asia, visiting Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Borneo, the Philippines and India, before returning to Europe to cover off the major capital cities.
Yes, I love the freedom of travelling but do you know what I love most? Meeting like-minded people from all over the world: Mexicans, Canadians, Americans, Germans, Aussies, Ecuadorians, South Africans, Europeans… And they all share the same passion: travel.
It’s for this reason that I created Fabulous Travel Guide, a place for female travellers and budding travel bloggers to share their stories online and provide advice to over 3,000+ monthly readers. It’s a collaborative space that celebrates girls on the road! So get involved and join the travel sisters tribe!
